Ohio FCCLA State Outreach Project The Giving Doll The Giving Doll was created by Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher, Jan Householder in March, 2006 as a community volunteer program, when a friend’s daughter Katherine, became a patient at St. Jude’s. Hand made cloth dolls were constructed from a copyrighted pattern by volunteer sewers. Katherine took the first dolls to the hospital when she went for treatments to give to other patients. When other needs became apparent, the program expanded to include children in a variety of settings. Along with St. Jude’s, dolls have been given to children in area hospitals, Battered Women’s Shelters, homeless shelters, children standing in line at area food banks, grief centers, funeral homes, agencies dealing with abuse and neglect, fire and police department, flood victims, Katrina victims, children of our deployed soldiers, Hospice, Salvation Army and more. Nearly 5000 dolls have been constructed and distributed. Children in every state are now hugging dolls for comfort along with children in 15 foreign countries. Dolls are given free of charge to children who are facing special circumstances, where a doll to hug could GIVE them faith, love, joy, hope and comfort. If you are interested in getting involved. Contact Jan Householder: jan@thegivingdoll.com. A copyrighted pattern will be sent along with more information about the project. This a great community project to get not only FCCLA members involved but also involving area Senior Centers, Sewing and Quilt Guilds and other community organizations. Supplies are easily obtained through publicity about the program along with a list of needed supplies.
